The Winchendon CAC, Inc. is dedicated to helping families and individuals in crisis, and the economically disadvantaged within the community by providing a wide range of services which includes: emergency assistance, housing information, medical transportation, Salvation Army Vouchers, Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, used furniture, information and referrals. There are also baby-sitting, parenting, nutrition and budgeting, GED, First Aid and CPR classes available. Other Services provided include WIC, Fuel Assistance intake, Battered Women's groups, Batterer's Groups, Anger Management, and Individual Counseling through North Central Human Services.

The Gardner CAC, Inc. is a non-profit organization providing a variety of programs to the economically disadvantaged of the Greater Gardner area. Food Distribution Program, which provides food to families and individuals (Mon-Fri - 9am to 1pm). Help Connection, provides a way to connect people to various services. Emergency Funds assisting needs like prescriptions, housing costs, and utilities when funding is available. Medical Transportation for the elderly, handicapped, and low-income that have no transportation. Fellowship Table, a free meal served at 5pm once a week. The agency offers a Clothing Closet, Holiday Programs, and applications for the Bonnie Brae summer youth program.

Get Help With Your Heating Bill  

If you're looking for direct assistance to help with your heating bills or energy needs this winter,
you can turn to three different programs.

State Fuel Assistance

• Administered through the state's Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD)
• Direct funds to consumers to pay heating bills
• Must apply through local Community Action Program (CAP) agencies
• Call the Cold Relief Heat Line: 1-800-632-8175
• MOC members & others deliver fuel for reduced margin to aid needy

Citizens Energy Oilheat Program

• MOC helped create this program, and dealers deliver fuel for a small stipend
• One time delivery of 175 gallons of heating oil at discounted rate
• Call 1-888-Joe-4-Oil

Salvation Army Good Neighbor Fund

• Funded through voluntary contributions
• Direct funds to consumer to pay heating bills
• In Eastern Massachusetts call: 1-800-334-3047

WorcesterResources.org currently includes information for the following types of assistance:

Cash Assistance Programs: provide low-income families, elders, and the disabled with financial and medical support for their basic needs, as well as education and job training to help families become financially independent.

Child Care and Preschool Programs: help low-income families and teen parents find and pay for child care and preschools so that the parents may work, go to school, or take part in job training programs.

Employment & Job Training Programs: provide job search assistance, career counseling, technical and vocational training, and unemployment benefits to workers who have lost their jobs or are looking for better jobs.

Energy Assistance Programs: include fuel assistance, weatherization, and furnace repair services to help families stay warm during the winter; utility discounts for low-income families; and utility shut-off protection for families in special circumstances.

Food Programs: offer free food, low cost food, and information about good nutrition to low-income families and individuals as well as seniors.

Health Care Programs: offer free or low-cost health coverage and services to eligible low and moderate-income families and individuals for medical treatment given by doctors, clinics, HMOs, hospitals, and pharmacies.

Housing and Homeless Programs: help families and individuals find permanent housing in safe, affordable public or privately owned units as well as temporary housing in emergency or transitional shelters.

Legal Assistance Programs: offer free legal help to low-income and elderly residents with legal problems concerning housing, government benefits, family law, or other non-criminal issues.

Tax Credits: help eligible persons reduce their taxes and, for some credits, can provide cash payments to workers even when they do not owe any taxes.

Transportation Services: include public bus transportation as well as flexible van/taxi services for elders, the disabled, and working families with special transportation needs.

Resources for Noncitizens: include refugee resettlement, English classes, legal help, translation, and other services; and government and non-profit assistance programs that provide housing, food, health care, and other benefits to noncitizens.

Resources for Seniors: include senior agencies, the Home Care Program and other benefit programs, protective services, the Social Security retirement program, and other services for seniors.

Resources for Youth: includes the Worcester Youth Services Directory for school-age youth.

Friendly House: a community-based, human services organization offering a wide range of programs and services for the Worcester community.
